It's also prone to become stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate through rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that can see around corners.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can work while you're at work, or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few just a few seconds.

With a sleek circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxes this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This could be a concern in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and also adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house in accordance with the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean one particular area of your house via the app or voice commands. A stairway mode is useful if you own a large furniture. Finally the recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.
