3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeler is ideal for off-roading providing an easy ride for your baby. They are also more convenient to move and push than a four-wheel buggy, especially those with fabric slings or modular seat units that are positioned comfortably in the best 3 wheel stroller frame, offering the best geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

A three-wheel buggy has excellent stability, which is why it is a great choice for off road walking (especially with an all-terrain or off-road style seat). It's worth bearing in mind that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels which means that they fall over more easily. A 3 wheel buggy-wheeled pram is a great option for those who run or enjoy walking fast uphill. This is especially true if you plan to connect a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that reclines flat and features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's light and compact, and is suitable to use from birth. It can be used with the car seat or carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging, however, it isn't designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle the tough terrain, then you'll need one with large wheels. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks while providing the smoothest ride for anyone. They are also great for jogging because they have built-in suspension and are easy to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they can be quite heavy to push.

The best 3-wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy is very mobile due to its 16 rear wheels and the front wheel can be locked. It has air-filled tyres that need to be pumped up every now and then. It can be used by children up until the age of three. It's also easy to move up and down kerbs, and it can fit into small car boot. It can also be used as a stroller with an infant carrycot or toddlers.

Sling seats made of fabric fit snugly within the frame of the buggie, as opposed to over it like modular seats. This design provides a lower centre of gravity and a perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you can never overestimate how often you'll be doing that as new parents!)

Seating

The capacity for seating of 3 wheelers is quite impressive, and there are a number of different options to choose from. For newborns, there is the option to use the carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can sit in the world-facing or parent facing seat that is large and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats don't recline fully however they can be lowered to the lowest position that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available, which offers the advantage of being placed snugly within the frame, rather than over the top of an open-back seat. This delivers a much lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, particularly on bumpy terrain or over curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this type of seat handled the obstacles.

In addition to a large shopping basket, this type of buggy typically has some very useful features like an extendable 50+ UV hood, an easy to use brake pedal, and some games-changing visibility lights that appear from the handlebars and can be placed in front of the occupants to increase their safety when they are tackling difficult terrain.

Storage

MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame won't fit through all the doors in their homes or small car boot - be sure you check the dimensions of the buggy once it's folded prior to purchasing in case you're concerned about space.

It's worth looking into a 3-wheeler that can take 2 (or even 3!) seats as your family grows. These are the best of both worlds and future proof your money. The iCandy strawberry sport is among the top of them; it can be used as a single seat from day dot and later converts to twin buggies when your baby starts walking.

Tyres

These tyres cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath found to offer "an outstanding ride for my toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres of the Phil and Ted's Sport made it easy for her to navigate the kerbs as well as other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes tricky to keep inflated and need to be replenished regularly. They are also more susceptible to punctures than foam tyres so you'll need to ensure that you have repair kits, spare inner tube and pump handy when out and about with your buggy.

PU tyres are typically used on pushchairs since they are a cheaper option than air-filled tyres, but they are equally robust. PU tyres are easily identified by their matte finish and supple feel. They also glide well on smooth and tightly woven surfaces.

It's usually possible to identify the difference between air-filled and PU tires by running your hands over each one, if it feels hard, then it's rubber and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also verify that your buggy is fitted with PU tyres by slipping the tyres on an even, clean surface - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are commonly used in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain common to this type of pushchair. This could make your buggy less stable because the foam will lose its springy quality. These tyres are also noisy due to the fact that they create a lot noise when you turn or drive around the town.
